Versace Gianni Versace started out in his
mother’s dressmaking business and by the age of 25 was
designing for some of the bigger fashion houses. In 1978 he
and his brother Santo started up the Versace label.
In
1997 he was murdered which led to his sister Donatella Versace
stepping up to lead designer which she has done with immense
success. She now designs and leads the direction for the
company with her brother Santo still by her side.
The
Versace label became a hit because of its wonderfully vibrant
colours and prints and sexy designs. It is a massive company
with interests not only in fashion but hotels. The Palazzo
Versace on the Gold Coast in Queensland is a truly spectacular
and luxurious six star hotel in a stunning
location.
Yves Saint Laurent YSL showed
his first collection in 1962 to wild applause and admiration.
He was a very shy and sensitive man, one not really made for
the brutal cut throat fashion world. Yet not only did he
manage to prosper but he survived to reach its pinnacle and
leave a legacy of beautiful, elegant and colourful designs and
some iconic products from his perfumes to his couture clothes.
His main aim
was for women to have style and not to follow fashion trends.
In the year 2002 he closed the doors of his house to retreat
into obscurity. It was the end of an era. The new
designer who has taken over now is Stefano Pilati who is
returning to the YSL classics and recapturing the market all
over again.
Zimmermann This dynamic Aussie label was started by sisters Nicky and Simone Zimmermann in 1991. They design clothes but their swimwear is what has won them the most attention. Their designs are very revealing and very daring. They have stores in Sydney, Melbourne, London and New York.
